Gaetano Pesce: Melissa Shoes

Posted by Marie on June 21, 2010 | 27 Comments

Check out this cool collaboration by Italian architect-artist-designer Gaetano Pesce and Melissa shoes:

The shoes are made of plastic disks you cut away to customize your own style. They say there’s seven possible styles, but I’m sure you creative types out there could come up with more ideas!

A blogger named Thai got a pair of the shoes and customized them herself (see below). I think they look cute. She even posted a video of the making of them on her blog you can check out (it’s not in English).

Kinda looks like you can eat em. Now I’m hungry :(

Anyway, I love collaborations between the different art fields. It always results in interesting things!

Nike World Cup Press Kits & Crayon Carver Diem Chau

Posted by Marie on June 14, 2010 | 10 Comments

This amazing work by artist and crayon carver extraordinaire Diem Chau for Wieden + Kennedy has been making it’s way around the web (and rightly so!):

You can see Robinho in Silver, Cristiano Ronaldo in White, Fabio Cannavaro in Antique Brass, Wanye Rooney in Timberwolf, Didier Drogba in Copper, and Franck Ribery in Gold. The final look of Robinho and Rooney are slightly different than seen here. You can see a lot more photos and the final crayons over at her blog The Pleasure of Tiny Things. Head over there as well for a great read about the project and her sacrifice of sleep to complete it!

Wieden + Kennedy did a great job with the Nike World Cup Press Kit presentation (photos courtesy of Wieden + Kennedy):

Beautiful display… I love the wood box. I think it’s a wonderful compliment to the crayons.

Diem is a really interesting artist and her use of materials is fantastic. You should check out all of her work over at her site.

BBC Series: The Genius Of Design

Posted by Marie on June 13, 2010 | 9 Comments

The BBC’s come out with a new video series about industrial design. So many everyday items we use pass by without much thought to the design behind them (which, of course is often considered a hallmark of good design). It’s think it would be great though for more people to be aware of the importance of designers and how much they have improved our lives. This is also an inspiring series for anyone in, or considering going into industrial design, or any design field for that matter.

Check out the first 2 parts:

The Genius of Design Part 1

The Genius of Design Part 2

The full 5 part series is available at BBCshop.com on DVD

Letterpress Printing: Studio On Fire

Posted by Marie on June 13, 2010 | 17 Comments

I love letterpress and there is a fantastic blog from  Minneapolis’s  Studio On Fire called Beast Pieces where they post up some of their work you should check out.

One example of the amazing work they do is this absolutely lovely 2010 calendar:

The colors are so beautiful. That orange is like KAPOW!

I’d love to get something printed with them… I ‘ve been working on a side-project might be letterpress suitable.
Oh, it makes my mind think, think, think.

I’m going to be moving soon and that means I like to look around at cool things to help decorate my new dwelling. I love looking at the stuff over at SUCK UK. Check out some of the cool ideas they’ve come up with:

SUCK UK 2

Pet Goldfish Bin Bags and Flower Grenades

SUCK UK 2

Slide Light

LA is already quite filled with  flowers so I don’t know where I’d use them here, but I think those Flower Grenades are so clever. The trash bags are just funny and I LOVE the Slide Light. Such great ideas…
